With Christmas fast approaching, and everyone rushing out to find those last minute gifts for our loved ones, let me challenge everyone to consider purchasing books this year. How many of you have books from your childhood that you still treasure? There’s nothing like opening a book from my childhood and seeing a handwritten note on the inside cover from my grandmother. Isn’t it wonderful how a signature can bring back floods of memories of those who made our past Christmases so special?
Last year, I heard an idea about giving three gifts to symbolically represent the gifts the three wise men gave to Jesus—one more way to keep the focus on the real reason for the season. One gift is to be something the person wants, one that he/she needs, and the last one is something to read. My favorite holiday + literacy =AWESOME! What a wonderful idea! This year, my entire family adopted this idea as a new tradition. It was fun shopping for a book that “fit” each person. I got my husband a subscription to Our State, a book of tattoos for my son, a Harlequin Romance novel for my Mom, and a book about Ford Mustangs with really cool pictures for my grandson --he’ll love it! And, I’ll be sure to write a special note on the inside cover.
As you’re picking out the perfect books for your loved ones, please consider picking up an extra one for the upcoming Book Drive our Interact Club is co-sponsoring with RCCC. Interact students will deliver these new books to all Kindergarten and First grade students at Bostian Elementary on March 2nd—National Read Across America Day (also Dr. Seuss’s birthday). Sadly, in 2011, 66% of our local elementary school students did not have books at home to read. Please join us in trying to lower this statistic.
Merry Christmas and happy reading over the break.
