The Rowan-Salisbury School System is in the first year of a technology 1:1 Digital Conversion. At Jesse Carson High School the learning environment has exploded with the addition of almost 1,300 teacher and student Macbook Air laptops along with many additional classroom technologies. These exciting changes have made it necessary to create a Student Help Desk. The Carson Student Help Desk is located in the Media Center for students and teachers to visit when they experience technology issues. The Student Help Desk provides an invaluable service to the school, as well as giving a learning opportunity for the student interns who run it.
The Student Help Desk interns are selected through an application process. They must be juniors or seniors, obtain teacher recommendations, and have an aptitude for technology. The students aid other students and teachers in troubleshooting their devices. Daily/weekly tasks include assisting students in the online sign in form, adding printers, cleaning malware, Learning Management System login help, and any other general software issues. Student interns also give support in the classroom by checking/fixing printer connections, projector setup/connections, and Apple TV connections when needed/requested. Our interns are tasked with using a wide variety of skills including, customer service, problem-solving, writing, analysis, and, of course. technology.
This semester we hope to expand student interns’ knowledge base by asking them to test applications and develop “How To” handouts and screencasts of those applications for students/teachers. We would also like to create a student intern blog on the Carson Media/Tech Weebly site for them to post general troubleshooting tips and app evaluations. In the future, we hope to expand the Student Help Desk by adding more interns and possibly giving more of a concentration in hardware as well as software.
