The following blog was written by Cameron Park, a Math Teacher at Jesse. C. Carson High School. In addition to teaching, Mr. Park coaches baseball.
Growing up, baseball is what energized me. Walls could be crumbling and if I stood on the pitcher’s mound, those walls no longer existed. All that existed in that moment was a victory. A win. Not just for me, but for others. I could only do my part to achieve such a win. I threw the baseball. After that moment, I could no longer rely on my arm for strength; I relied on the rest of my team. If the team did not work together, no one would feel that victory. Baseball taught me that lesson; the importance of working together as a team and it connects to all aspects of life, especially our careers as educators.
In order for our team to win, to see students learn successfully, we have to work together as a team. Everyone is a teacher, but not everyone has the same strengths. Some have great ideas, some have great lessons, and some have great organization. Some have experience while some are new. Some love technology, some hate it and think it is the devil. Some are introverts and some are extroverts. We are all different, but when we come together, we can make success happen. We can achieve that victory. Just as my baseball team, everyone must understand the role they fulfill as teachers. If a baseball team is full of outfielders, no one can pitch or play infield. If everyone is a pitcher, no one can field the other positions. If all we have is new teachers, we can’t learn wisdom from veteran teachers. We need everyone. Everyone matters.
We try to tell our students this but actions speaks louder than words. We can be the models for this. Collaboration, working together, is a selfless act to better students. If our motto is “Students First,” shouldn’t we be trying everything we can to improve each other and ourselves? Shouldn’t we be trying to help one another earn a victory? Division amongst a school can lead to destruction just like a lack of team players will cause losses. If we want Carson to be the best, we need to fulfill our roles together selflessly. What can I do to help? Can you help me? The most successful teams are the teams that unite together for one cause. Our cause is to better our student’s lives. So let us be united for our students, school, and our community.
Let unity energize us. Let’s go win.
