It's All About Growth

This blog was written by Mrs. Ashlinn Trexler, a School Counselor at JCHS. In addition to counseling students, Mrs. Trexler is responsible for many other school-wide functions, such as scholarships!

It’s almost that time…time for exams, end of the year CATS parties, graduation and for school to be out.  I can see the excitement on the students’ faces as they shout that there are only a few weeks left to go and are dreaming of walking across the stage.  Especially the seniors!  They are ready to tackle the world and move on to the next level as they go into the world and take with them all the many things they have learned from their time at Carson.  This time of year, it seems as if we are on a constant roller coaster going up and down and as fast as possible.  Monday is here and then it’s Friday before the blink of an eye.  Time seems to go incredibly fast and it is hard to stop and be in the moment.  It is hard to find time to appreciate the time we have left with our students, both good and bad.  I get caught up in this myself as I have my long list of to-do items getting ready for all that comes with the end of the year and this crazy time!

And then I remember…is this not what education is all about?  People constantly learning from each other and growing as individuals no matter what age or situation?  No matter how busy and hectic it may seem.  It never fails that a student will come into my office to talk to me about a problem maybe at home, with friends, or in class and will end up telling me something extraordinary that makes me stop and think.  I truly feel privileged to have the opportunity to impact students, and I try my best to remember this when they come in to talk and I have a million things I have to get completed.  The students we teach are extraordinary, and the time we have to impact their lives is so short in the big scheme of life.  I urge you to take a moment out of each day and remember why you became a teacher, a leader, and what made you want to help students grow when you decided to go into Education.

It is so important in today’s world to appreciate each and every moment we have with every student and person we encounter…yes, even those you are thinking of right now that you do not want to deal with: friends, parents and students alike.  If we can slow down and realize the need to appreciate the struggles we have then learning can take place in everything we do.  We just have to let it.  The roller coaster of life we are living is one that has both good and bad turns to it.  I learn each day from appreciating each situation I go through, from the positive events that occur with students, and from the negative encounters I have as well.  It is all about growing a little each day, and being able to overcome the obstacles of life…isn’t that what we want for our students as well?
