One Chance

The following blog was written by Mr. Barry Mitchem, a Physical Education Teacher at Carson High School. In addition to teaching PE, Mr. Mitchem coaches football, indoor track, and track.
“One Chance is all you need” is a quote from the Track and Field star Jesse Owens. This is exactly what our Carson Track Athletes get when they decide to participate on our school’s Track and Field Teams. The events of Track and Field can be traced back to the ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC. Although Track and Field is rich in history, it usually doesn’t get the attention that other high school sports get due to the nature of the sport. While Track and Field is a team sport, all the athletes must perform individually to score points for their team.  The Rowan County Track Championship Meet was held on April 19 and our student athletes had their “one chance” to shine and our Carson Cougar athletes shined brightly. Carson Men and Women were 2016 Rowan County Track Championship Runner-Ups. This was the best finish for the Women’s Team in school history. It was the highest finish for both Men and Women teams in the same Rowan County Championship meet. Both teams had strong individual performances to attain this accomplishment. The 3200 Meter Relay team consisting of Zac Marchinko, Nick Cox, Silas Wertz and Dylan Koontz placed first and established an all time county record of 8:15.  There were several Individual County Track Champions.  Zac Marchinko won the 1600 Meter Run and 3200 Meter Run and was named Distance MVP. Brenden Westbrook won the Long Jump and Triple Jump and was named Field MVP. Carson’s Chloe Kirkpatrick was the county champion in the women’s pole vault.  Although only a few of the Carson’s Track athletes can claim the title of individual county champion, all Carson’s athletes utilized their “one chance” to do their best for Carson. Our athletes next “one chance” will be the The SPC Conference Track Championship on May 3 and 4 at East Rowan.
