Notes and Musings from One of the Oldest Rats in the Carson Barn

The following blog was written by David Hord. Mr. Hord is the Chair of the Exceptional Children's Department at Carson High School. In addition to his self-proclomation as one of the "oldest rats in the Carson Barn," many of us also think he's one of the wisest!

The minutes of daylight are increasing. It appears that the sights and sounds of Spring are already upon us. The rebirth has begun and opportunites abound.

The New Year is the occasion for many of us to take stock and assess and reassess. Many resolve to make life changes to improve our physical, fiscal, mental and emotional wellness. Many of us review our habits that are unhealthy and unwise and we vow to change our ways.

For those in our profession, second semester in the block schedule is a chance for a fresh start-a fresh look at ourselves and our kids. Teachers who are repeating courses from Semester 1 have the chance to tweak and revise strategies and plans. Some work beautifully and some don’t. What works great in one block, may not in another. Don’t despair. You are smart and talented.

Teachers teaching new courses start with a clean slate. I believe there to be an excitement over possibilities. Our “skinny” teachers are playing a different game. They have the same kids the entire year.  Another set of challenges await you. I have no wisdom to impart, other than plan, collaborate, revise, and reflect.

As we enter Spring semester, I urge you to be constantly proactive and not just reactive.  Easier said than done I know and appreciate.

I will close with some thoughts by David Geurin.

Eight Things Successful Teachers Should Never Say
  1. That’s not my job.
  2. Those aren’t my kids.
  3. There’s not enough time.
  4. It’s not fair.
  5. I taught it but they didn’t learn it.
  6. We have always done it this way.
  7. But it won’t work with these students.
  8. I don’t need any help.
